Philip Lewis Invited To Houses Of Parliament…
In his role as Ambassador to the Mouth Cancer Foundation dentist Philip Lewis was recently privileged to be invited to the report of the all-party committee on the early detection of cancer in the UK.
The report centred on regional differences in detection of all sorts of cancer and how targets can be improved.
All cancers respond better to treatment if detected early but the meeting highlighted how different patients’ experiences can be in different geographical areas. Among the guests were some 40 MPs and Government Ministers along with leaders of various charities and support organisations including Macmillan and Cancer Research UK.
Philip Lewis continues to work to educate dental and medical professionals on the early detection of mouth cancer with more lectures planned throughout 2015.
Mouth Cancer Lectures for Community Groups
If you run a local community group or club and would like a short presentation about mouth cancer please contact Philip Lewis at the practice or by email at info@wightdental.co.uk.
The presentation takes about half an hour and describes the symptoms of mouth cancer, self- examination and describes the scans carried out by your dental practitioner or doctor. This is a presentation which could save your life or the lives of those dear to you!
The presentation is free-of- charge. Please email or telephone 01983 759567 for further details.
Then Invited Again!
November is Mouth Cancer Action Month. Philip and Joy were honoured to be invited to the launch in Westminster. As well as speeches from MP’s and professionals a moving account of her experiences was given by a mouth cancer survivor.
During November Avenue Road Dental Practice will be happy to carry out free mouth cancer examinations (by appointment) for both patients and non- patients of the practice.
If you or a friend would like an examination please call us on 01983 759567. Mouth cancer is on the increase in the UK but early detection saves both lives and the quality of life.
Treatment in the early stages is far more simple than when the disease is discovered late. That’s why everybody should receive regular scans. Sir Paul Beresford MP addresses guests at the launch:
Crafty Jane!
Dentistry is as much an art as a science. All members of the dental team need an appreciation of beauty to help provide dentistry which looks as good as it feels. Dental Nurse Jane Griffiths is no exception. In her spare time she produces an array of artistic products. Among her creations are these simple garden lanterns. Made from discarded glass pots, decorated with frosting and painted designs and illuminated with tea-lights they add a real sparkle to evenings in the garden and give a cosy glow on winter nights. Try making some yourself!
November Recipe
Recently Philip and Joy Lewis attended an International Dental Conference in Italy. One of the meals served was ‘Pasta Arabica’. Chilli may not seem to be a traditional Italian ingredient but it has in fact been common in the country since the time of the Moorish Empire.
Here’s how to make it.
Ingredients:
- 1 red and 1 green chilli
- Tin chopped tomatoes
- 3 large cloves garlic
- Light olive oil
- A handful of fresh chives or a finely chopped onion
- Herbs: Oregano, thyme, parsley (as much as you like; preferably fresh, not dried)
- Sea Salt, ground black pepper
- Up to 2 teaspoons sugar
Chop the garlic, onion (or chives) and the de-seeded chillies and sauté in light olive oil until soft but not coloured. Add the herbs. After 1 minute stir in the chopped tomatoes and simmer for 15 minutes. Taste, season and add sugar if necessary (tomatoes tend to be sour). Serve with any kind of pasta.
This is meant to be a hot sauce but you can adjust the amount of chilli to suit your own taste. The vegetables included all are reported to have medicinal properties but since it’s delicious in any case you may think this doesn’t matter! Arabica works well as a vegetarian dish but you could of course add meat or fish if you wish.
